Millions are expected to go to view the total solar eclipse today, Monday, 8 April. As a result, significant parts of the country may see traffic congestion and travel delays in the coming days, according to government officials.
"This rare event may be once in a lifetime for some, but it could have far-reaching consequences for the travelling public," Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) chief Shailen Bhatt said in a video message in late March."So please plan ahead to arrive early, and if you can, stay put to avoid traffic congestion."
According to the American Astronomical Society, eclipse chasers, also known as umbraphiles, will go to any length and go practically anywhere to witness totality.
The FHWA stated that more than 32 million Americans reside inside the eclipse path, which extends from the Mexican border in Texas to the Canadian border in Maine, and millions more are expected to visit the area for the event.
Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer, said the complete solar eclipse is expected to be the largest mass travel event in the United States in 2024, bringing together both eclipse experts and inexperienced sky watchers. He compared it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a notice last week warning that eclipse-related travel would exacerbate the already crowded spring break week. While Thursday, April 4 was the busiest travel day (with 50,670 planned flights) , the FAA warns that Friday, April 5, will also be busy at the airports.
