South Africa elections 2024: President Ramaphosa calls for unity after ANC loses majority

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has conceded that his African National Congress (ANC) party faced a difficult election result, losing its majority for the first time since apartheid ended 30 years ago.

The ANC, previously led by Nelson Mandela, gained 159 seats in the 400-member parliament in Wednesday's election, down from 230 in the previous session.

President Ramaphosa continued to laud the outcome as a win for democracy, urging rival parties to find common ground and reportedly preparing for coalition talks.

The opposition Democratic Alliance party has stated that it is ready for coalition discussions with President Ramaphosa, although it opposes several of his government's core aims.

After all ballots were counted, the ANC finished with 40%, down from 58% in the previous election, the electoral commission announced on Sunday.

Analysts noted the figure was lower than the party's worst-case scenario of 45%. The ANC must now create a coalition to establish the next government.
