A multi-story building under construction collapsed in the South African city of George, killing three people and trapping dozens more, according to authorities.
24 people were evacuated from the site and transported to hospitals for treatment, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the municipality of George, a coastal township east of Cape Town.
According to a statement from the town of George, 51 persons remained trapped.
"Seventy-five members of the construction crew were confirmed on site at the time of the incident," Western Cape Premier Alan Winde stated earlier.
According to the provincial government, police and rescue teams with sniffer dogs were on the scene.
"This will be a very lengthy exercise that will most likely last all night," stated George Mayor Leon van Wyk.
