Today, an asteroid named 2024 MK will make its closest approach to Earth, travelling at nearly three-quarters the distance between Earth and the moon.
A South African observatory discovered it two weeks ago and estimates its width to be between 393 and 853 feet (120 and 260 metres).
A 7,579-foot (2,310-metre) asteroid sailed safely past Earth on Thursday, but it was far away and only visible to professional telescopes.
Skywatchers will need a tiny telescope on Saturday because the asteroid isn't bright enough to be visible with the naked eye. It will be moving fast over the southern sky, making it difficult to see.
Viewers in the Southern Hemisphere will have the best chance of witnessing it as the asteroid will be higher overhead.
Those in the United States may prefer to wait until Saturday night, when the asteroid would appear less dazzling but easier to see without the sun's overwhelming brightness.
If you miss out, mark your calendars for April 13, 2029, when an asteroid named Apophis will pass by Earth and be visible to the naked eye from areas of Europe, Africa, and Asia.
