Authorities were attempting to assist a beached sperm whale stranded on a sandbar off Florida's Gulf Coast on Sunday, but warned the water conditions were too risky for workers to safely approach and give a sedative.

The Venice Police Department stated in Facebook posts that the whale was still alive on Sunday afternoon after beaching on a sandbar approximately 50 yards (45 metres) from Service Club Park.

Due to gusts of wind and surf, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation scientists believe that responding to this situation on Monday, when weather conditions are more favourable, will be their best option. As of Sunday evening, the whale was still alive but breathing laboriously.

A special zone has been put in place to allow authorities to check the whale's condition at the spot near Venice, which is roughly 75 miles (120 km) south of Tampa. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office and Mote Marine Laboratory workers were also helping, according to the police department's original post.

According to an afternoon tweet by Venice police, experts with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission believe the water conditions are still too dangerous to approach the whale, which is estimated to be 50 feet (15 metres) long. A police Facebook post early Sunday stated that the whale was 70 feet (21 metres) long.

Police said authorities would do another assessment of conditions at low tide Sunday evening, but their chances of helping the whale were low.
