Sri Lanka: Motorsports race car hits crowd making seven deaths

A sports car rammed into a crowd at a motor event in Sri Lanka, causing the deaths of seven people and injuring 21 other spectators, on Sunday, 21 April.

The Fox Hill Supercross race in Diyatalawa, an army base town, attracted more than 100, 000 people.

The army said three spectators, including an 8-year-old girl and four race officials were among the dead.

Footage widely posted on social media captured the aftermath of the disaster, including shouts in the spectators and people racing to the scene.

Five individuals were killed at the site, and two died later in the hospital. Others are still in serious condition, officials said.

Few details have been revealed about the driver's condition or whether he will face prosecution.

However, authorities claimed a thorough police investigation was underway into the crash on the army-owned track.

According to witnesses, the incident occurred shortly after another car overturned on the circuit.

Officials attempted to slow drivers near the scene by waving yellow lights, but as they passed, one red car went off course and collided with spectators on the side of the unsecured track.
