In a report to Tanzania's parliament on the situation in his country since January, Tanzania's Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa, reported 155 deaths and 236 injuries as a result of flash floods and landslides, triggered by El Niño. Parliament hears another 100-150 mm of rain is anticipated by Friday, 26 April.

PM Majaliwa warned that the rains could continue throughout May, urging people to evacuate flood-prone locations. He noted that the tragedy has already touched around 200,000 people and over 51,000 families.

Kenya and Burundi were also impacted by heavy rains, sparking a humanitarian crisis in the area.

"The intense El Nino rains, along with strong winds, floods, and landslides in many sections of the country, have caused extensive damage,” said PM Majaliwa in parliament.

"These include loss of life, destruction of crops, homes, citizens' property, and infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and railways," he said.

The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), often known as the "Indian Niño" due to its similarities to the Pacific Niño, is the differential in sea-surface temperatures in opposing areas of the Indian Ocean.

During a positive phase, the waters in the western Indian Ocean are warmer than usual, resulting in greater rain regardless of El Niño. When a positive IOD and El Niño occur simultaneously, as happened last year, rains in East Africa can become excessive.

In 1997 and 1998, catastrophic flooding was recorded due to one of the strongest positive IOD trends on record and a strong El Niño. These resulted in almost 6,000 deaths across five countries in the region.
