Turkey cable car crash: Investigation underway after 174 people rescued

One cable car hit a pole on Friday afternoon, sending its passengers plummeting to the mountainside below.

On Saturday, 13 April the last of 174 people stranded on cable cars high above a mountain in southern Turkey were safely evacuated.

The rescue operation was completed about 23 hours after one pod of a cable car collided with a pole and ripped open on Friday, killing one and wounding seven others as they fell to the rocks below.

Hundreds of people were left stranded, with around 40 still stuck high above the mountain 19 hours later. There were 607 search and rescue people and ten helicopters, some of which were equipped with night vision.

Rescue operations for the stranded people continued into the night on Friday and Saturday. According to officials,the rescue operations involve 543 first responders and seven helicopters, including AFAD, Coast Guard, firefighting, and climbing teams from across Turkey.

The cable car line was finished in 2017. It undergoes a thorough inspection at the start of the year, as well as frequent inspections throughout the year. The Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation.

An expert committee, consisting of mechanical and electrical engineers as well as health and safety experts, was formed to investigate the occurrence.
