UK: Actor Kevin Spacey cleared of sexual offense charges

After a four-week trial in London, a jury declared actor Kevin Spacey not guilty of nine sexual assault counts.

According to complaints made by four individuals, the charges included sexual behavior without consent and indecent and sexual assault.

After more than 12 hours of discussion, the jury’s verdict turned in favor of acquitting Spacey of all nine charges.

The allegations against Spacey stemmed from alleged actions involving four individuals that occurred over several years, up until 2013, when the actor was working in London.

The UK charges come after repeated sexual assault allegations against the American actor in recent years.

Following the initial claims in 2017, Netflix withdrew Spacey from the popular drama series House of Cards, and subsequent films starring the actor were either shelved or reshot without him.

A jury of nine men and three women heard from Spacey, multiple witnesses, and his accusers over the course of four weeks.

Spacey and his attorneys both denied any misconduct. Spacey testified in court that while he had been “promiscuous,” he had never assaulted anyone.

The actor was branded as a “sexual bully” by prosecutors.

Spacey burst into tears and mouthed the words “thank you, thank you” to the jury as the judgment was read aloud in London’s Southwark Crown Court.

“I am humbled by the outcome,” he said outside the court.
