U.K.: PM Rishi Sunak announces general elections on 4 July

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a surprise general election in the United Kingdom on July 4 in an address outside Downing Street. Sunak spoke about the British economy and his own government's ability to rule.

The news came on the same day as official numbers revealed inflation in the UK had fallen substantially to 2.3%, its lowest level in nearly three years, owing to significant falls in home costs.

Sunak highlighted this in his address, noting that "economic stability is the bedrock of any success". He recognised that "things are not easy" for the British people, but stressed that his administration had a clear plan in place.

The national election will see voters across the United Kingdom elect 650 members to the House of Commons. The party with the most seats in the Commons will form the next government, with its leader as prime minister. The next government's term will be up to five years.
