On Tuesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, introduced the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services in Abu Dhabi.

PM Modi is in the Gulf nation for a two-day visit, where he will open the first Hindu stone temple.

During their bilateral encounter, Modi and the UAE President exchanged multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs).

In a meeting with the UAE President, PM Modi said : “Brother, firstly, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you for your warm welcome. We have met five times in the last seven months, which is very rare. I have also got the opportunity to come here seven times... the way we have progressed in every field, there is a joint partnership between India and UAE in every field.”

Upon his landing in the UAE, PM Modi was welcomed by the UAE President Al Nahyan, both shaking hands and hugging each other.

Sharing his feeling, PM Modi wrote on the X platform (formerly Twitter), stating that the meeting will be a “productive visit” that will strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told X that PM Modi's first leg of his tour to the UAE will include meetings with UAE leaders and community members, as well as the inauguration of the BAPS Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi.

On Monday, UPI services were launched in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, with Prime Minister Modi describing them as "linking historic ties with modern digital technology."

Over the last two years, many countries have begun to accept payments via UPI. According to the Indian government, France, UAE, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Bhutan, and Nepal have implemented the UPI services and can now accept UPI payments.
