On Saturday, a mountain lion assault killed one person and injured another in a remote area of Northern California, according to officials.
The two brothers, aged 18 and 21, were antler shed hunting in Georgetown, California, when a mountain lion attacked them, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife reported that the mountain lion implicated in the attack was euthanised on Saturday.
The department announced on Sunday that DNA from a mountain lion discovered near Georgetown matched DNA recovered at the scene of the attack.
According to officials, the younger sibling contacted 911 at 1:13 p.m. local time after being separated from his elder brother during the attack.
Deputies began exploring the area, and at approximately 1:46 p.m., they discovered the mountain lion huddled close to the older brother.
Shots were fired to scare away the animal. Deputies arrived too late to save the 21-year-old. According to the sheriff's office, the 18-year-old sustained "traumatic injuries" to his face and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities have not published the victims' names.
Mountain lion attacks towards humans are uncommon. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has reported 13 attacks in the state, 20 years ago, since 2004, with only one death.
