According to video evidence revealed Tuesday by a police oversight organisation, Chicago officers fired roughly 100 rounds in 41 seconds during a traffic stop, killing one man and injuring one officer.
Last month, five tactical cops in an unmarked police vehicle approached an SUV driven by Dexter Reed, alleging he was not wearing a seatbelt.
The video shows the 26-year-old man temporarily lowering and then raising a window and refusing to exit the vehicle while more officers arrived, shouting instructions, and drawing firearms.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) said early evidence indicates Reed fired first, hurting an officer in the Humboldt Park neighbourhood on the city's West Side. Then, four officers returned fire with 96 rounds.
The gunshots continued even after "Reed exited his vehicle and fell to the ground," according to COPA, which released body-worn camera footage, 911 calls, and police records.
The footage revealed provided a more complete picture than what police initially offered last month.
Previously, Police Superintendent Larry Snelling stated that the shooting on March 21 began with a traffic stop and was an "exchange of gunfire."
