An emergency slide fell off a Delta passenger jet shortly after takeoff on Friday, forcing the pilots to return to John F. Kennedy International Airport, officials said.
The pilots of Delta Air Lines Flight 520 from New York to Los Angeles reported tremors and banging shortly after takeoff, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
"Delta 520, we got an indication that the right wing slide latch on the door, one of the latches, is showing its open indication."
"We're starting to pick up a slight vibration, some banging noise from that right wing slide. But so far, everything looking normal..."
"We plan on returning back to Kennedy and having them take a look at it. We are starting to get a little bit of a vibration out that right side."
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the plane turned around and landed at JFK at 8:35 a.m. after approximately 33 minutes in flight.
After an inspection, crews discovered that an emergency slide from one of the Boeing 767's exits had disconnected from the aircraft, Delta stated in a statement.
Crews were attempting to establish where the slide landed, according to the airline.
"Delta is fully supporting retrieval efforts and will fully cooperate with investigations," the company stated in a statement.
The 33-year-old jet was taken out of service, and the passengers were transferred to another trip to Los Angeles, according to the FAA.
The agency stated that it is investigating the situation.
