U.S: Domestic violence call turns into shooting, killing three in Minnesota

On Sunday, 18 February, Burnsville authorities reported a paramedic and two policemen were shot and killed in a domestic violence call that later turned out to be a shooting in a Twin Cities suburb. They also reported the death of the suspect who shot them.

According to Superintendent Drew Evans from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said at about 1.50 a.m., officers answered a call on 33rd Avenue South and East 126th Street.

People including seven young children from 2 to 15 years old were barricaded inside together with the armed suspect.

Superintendent Evans said that law police “spent quite a bit of time negotiating with this individual,” and paramedics arrived for support at 5 a.m. After the suspect started to open fire, dispatch issued an order for everyone to stay back.

Burnsville officials identified the victims as officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, as well as firefighter/paramedic Adam Finseth who were shot dead in the line of duty. Sgt. Adam Medlicott was also shot, although he is expected to survive.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was confirmed dead at 8 a.m., and the family members in the house were able to escape safely shortly after.

Evans stated that information about the timing, and exchange of shots are unclear at this point in the inquiry. He said that the officers did shoot back and highlighted that the “individual had several guns and large amounts of ammunition.”

Sunday's incident has been the eighth time since June that first responders have been murdered or injured by gunfire in Minnesota or adjacent regions.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 18 policemen have been slain in the line of duty around the country this year, four of whom were shot.
