U.S.: Kentucky driver rescued from truck dangling on bridge

After a vehicle slammed through a barrier in Louisville, Kentucky, a driver was rescued from the cabin of a truck that was left dangling over the brink of a bridge.

Firefighters went down to remove the driver, and officials said she was uninjured. Rescuers then focused on retrieving the rest of the truck that was in a dangerous position as it was hanging over the Ohio River.

Police acknowledged there was a "motor vehicle collision" on the bridge and said the route will be stopped "for a period of time."

Firefighters reported that the driver was rescued from the vehicle using ropes and ladders and was safely back on the bridge within 45 minutes. They noted that no one has ever entered the water below.

One of the firefighters claimed it was "extremely lucky" that the truck did not sink into the river, which was about 75 feet (23 metres) below.

The bridge has been closed. Police said it was unclear how the incident occurred and that an investigation is ongoing.
