U.S.: 'Man in the iron lung' dies at the age of 78

The famous "man in the iron lung" who was also a polio survivor, passed away at the age of 78.

Paul Alexander, a six-year-old from Dallas, Texas, was infected with polio and became paralysed from the neck down in 1952.

The condition rendered him unable to breathe freely, prompting doctors to implant him in a metal cylinder known as an "iron lung," where he would spend the remainder of his life.

Despite leaving the cylinder for brief periods of time, Paul went on to get a legal degree practising law, and publish a memoir.

By the 1960s, medical advances made iron lungs obsolete, but Alexander continued to live in the cylinder as he said, he was used to it.
