Over the weekend, animal rescuers were able to lure more than 100 Atlantic white-sided dolphins away from shallow waters near Cape Cod after approximately 125 were stranded there.

According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), which assisted in the rescue effort, an estimated 13 dolphins died, with one having to be euthanised.

The group said it was the largest mass stranding it had dealt with on the Cape in its 26-year tenure there. The reason for the dolphins' stranding is unknown, according to rescuers.

Cape Cod is known as a global stranding hotspot because of the curvature of its beaches and the fluctuating tides.

The team began on foot, herding the critters into deeper waters, and then utilised three small boats outfitted with underwater pingers, which generate noise underwater, according to the organisation.

More than 25 staff members from the organisation and 100 trained volunteers assisted in the rescue effort.
