An Ohio mother whose 16-month-old daughter died after being left alone in a playpen for ten days last summer while she went on vacation, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Monday.
Kristel Candelario, 32, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and child endangerment last month as part of a plea agreement with Cuyahoga County prosecutors that resulted in the dismissal of two murder counts and one felonious assault charge.
According to authorities, Candelario left her daughter, Jailyn, at home in Cleveland when she went on vacation to Detroit and Puerto Rico in June 2023.
When she returned ten days later, she discovered that the girl was not breathing in the playpen and contacted 911. Emergency personnel said the girl was “extremely dehydrated” and pronounced her dead shortly after they arrived.
The Cuyahoga County medical examiner's office conducted an autopsy and confirmed that the infant died of malnutrition and severe dehydration.
Judge Brendan Sheehan of County Common Pleas Court warned Candelario she had done "the ultimate betrayal" by leaving her kid alone without food.
Candelario, who has struggled with depression and other mental health concerns, claims she has asked for forgiveness every day.
