The bullets were fired west of Union Station, a railroad station in downtown Kansas City where the parade finished around 14:00 local time, with hundreds of fans assembled to enjoy the festivities.

According to local reports, Kansas City Chiefs players were still on stage when the first gunfire rang out. The gunfire prompted the assembled audience, including the mayor and his family members, to flee for shelter.

More than 800 police officers had already arrived to watch the gathering, according to organisers. The city's fire department was also present to provide medical assistance.

According to one law enforcement source, the shooting looked to be the result of a heated altercation that escalated. The source stated that it was not related to terrorism.

Police said they are looking for a motive and gathering physical and digital evidence. An investigation is underway.
