An extremely powerful solar storm approaching Earth which might cause the occurrence of northern lights to appear over the United States this weekend, potentially disrupting power and communications.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a rare geomagnetic storm watch, the first in nearly two decades. That was supposed to become a warning Friday night, when the solar outburst's impacts would reach Earth.
NOAA has previously advised operators of power plants and spacecraft in orbit to be cautious.
According to NOAA, the sun began producing intense solar flares on Wednesday, resulting in five plasma explosions capable of interrupting orbiting satellites and electricity infrastructures on Earth.
