As temperatures climbed over the weekend in Washington DC, a wax figure of President Abraham Lincoln melted.
With a head and hand missing, the statue is now barely recognisable. The wax forming the chest dripped to one of the legs, his foot became a glob and the chair on which Abraham Lincolm was sitting sank to the ground.
The head of the Lincoln Memorial's 6-foot wax monument is now being repaired, leaving a wire protruding out of the 16th president's neck.
The memorial is located on the grounds of Camp Barker in the nation's capital, a Civil War-era refugee camp that housed formerly enslaved and freed African Americans and is now home to an elementary school.
Sandy Williams IV, a Virginia-based artist, installed it outside Garrison Elementary School as part of his Wax Monuments Series.
The replica is not only a wax statue, but also a candle. This is not the first time it has had melting concerns.
The statue was built in the same spot last September. However, the first version of the wax monument had over 100 wicks that were lit prematurely, melting a large chunk of the art work before its dedication ceremony.
According to its website, the piece is a "direct commentary on DC's history of Civil War-era Contraband Camps".
The DC-metro area was placed on heat alert over the weekend with soaring temperatures expected throughout the week.
Local media sites stated that the wax head will be reattached this week.
