On Wednesday, 17 April will mark a history in the world of ballet. Dressed in white tutus and tightly coiffed hair, hundreds of dancers gathered at New York's Plaza Hotel to set a new world record for dancing on pointe in one location.
The event was organised by Youth America Grand Prix, a ballet scholarship programme honouring its 25th anniversary with three nights of performances at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
The dancers aged 9 to 19 competed for scholarships, as well as professional dancers who graduated from the program.
Tchaikovsky music played as the ballerinas stood on tiptoes and quickly transferred their weight from one foot to the other, a step known as bourrée, for a full minute.
"353 is a new Guinness world record! Congratulations!", said Tina Shi, an assessor for Guinness World Records, when announcing the results.
Since 1999, the New York-based Youth America Grand Prix has hosted the world's largest student ballet scholarship competition.
The previous record for ballerinas doing pointe en masse was 306.
