A bus carrying pilgrims collapsed into a deep ditch in southwest Pakistan, killing 17 and injuring 16, Pakistani officials announced Thursday, April 11, 2024.
They were heading to a revered religious place in Balochistan late Wednesday, the first day of Eid Al-Fitr celebrations and a Pakistani public holiday, according to Shahid Rind, a provincial government official.
The driver lost control of the vehicle in Las Bela, about 25 kilometres from the pilgrims' destination.
Those in critical condition, approximately 15 persons, were sent to a hospital in neighbouring Sindh province. There were 33 passengers on the bus, including the driver.
Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti extended his condolences to the families affected following the incident.
